fishing

Portland Bay offers land-based anglers the choice of breakwater, surf or river fishing, with a huge variety of catches, including Salmon, King George Whiting, Snapper, Mulloway, Tailor, Trevally, Garfish, Snook, Sweep, Mullet, Flathead, Yellow Tail Kingfish to name but a few.
Game fishing is also available in the region and the Portland Sport and Game Fishing Club operates a 27MEG Marine Radio watch. The Radio Base is on 94, while the Police Base in on 88.
Fishing is also popular in the Fitzroy, Surry and Glenelg Rivers, along with Yambuk and Bridgewater Lakes. Further information can be obtained at the Portland Visitor Information Centre.
The summer fishing spots are protected by a land outcrop from the westerly weather with the added bonus of a safe harbour. This harbour boasts one of the best boat ramps in Victoria with lights and cleaning tables with running water. The city has a new coast guard boat and marine base station for fishermen.
In January, one of the 'hottest' types of fish is shallow line sizzling, gear smashing yellow tail king fish. They are not easy to catch in shallow water and sometimes they are very large around the Cape Nelson lighthouse. Mulloway are 'a sight for sore eyes', they taste fantastic and are a summer fish. Sharks such as makos and thresher do their line ripping and famous jumping out of the water antics, then the blue sharks, gummies, bronze whalers and schoolies are here in our seas.
Morwong, blue morwong, snapper and coral perch - a true smorgasboard of fish - can also be caught in our waters. In summer you will catch plenty of torpedo squid averaging 1kg, but they can grow to more than 4 kg.
