The Great
South West Walk
Unique to anything in the world, The Great South West Walk provides the
chance to discover the natural features that make Australia so exceptional.
The contrasts of this 250km walk are amazing: from a forest section with
spectacular wild flowers, to a river gorge with precipitous limestone
cliffs; long stretches of beach with mountainous sand dunes and rugged
capes with sheer cliff faces that endure the wrath of the treacherous
southern sea.
Take an hour, a day, a week or two discovering what The Great South West
Walk offers. The walk can be accessed for day and short walks, is well
marked and features 16 campsites dotted along the way. All campsites feature
a pit toilet, fresh water supply and a wood barbecue or stone fire ring.
For those who crave creature comforts, various accommodation houses exist
along the way.
The best time to explore The Great South West Walk is from October to
December, or March to June. You should allow at least 12 days to complete
the full walk. Other activities can be interspersed along the way, such
as canoeing, mountain bike riding and caving which will make your adverture
even more diverse, exciting and enjoyable.
The Visitor Information Centre has strip maps and track notes, twenty
short walks, a broadsheet map, a video and other information, which is
available at a small charge.

Seal Caves
- Scenic Walk
Discover one of Cape Bridgewater's most
popular treasures - the Australian Fur Seals. Seal Point is home to more
than 650 seals. You can take an energetic 2 hour return walk to the seal
colony from either the Bridgewater Beach kiosk or the carpark on the hill.
A less energetic 3 hour return walk can be taken from the Blowholes carpark.
When you arrive at the seal-viewing platform you will be able to see seals
basking in the sun and frollicking in the water below. Alternatively,
you can take a 45-minute boat trip with Seal by Sea Tours to experience
a unique interaction with these creatures in their natural habitat.
Sea Cliff
Nature Walk
The Sea Cliff Nature Walk takes in views out to the Southern Ocean around
the cliff tops and farmland of Cape Nelson. It
is a gentle 3km loop walk leaving from the carpark adjacent to the Cape
Nelson Road and Scenic Drive.
The Enchanted
Forest
This 45 minute round trip walk takes you through the canopy to lookouts
and boardwalks where you can view the ocean and spectacular cliff formations.
The dense, almost tropical vegetation has been created due to an old landslip
below the level of the cliff top and covered by Moonah Trees (Melaleuca
lancealata).
Smelter
Nature Walk
Together with 'The Friends of the Great South West Walk', Portland Aluminium
has constructed a paved nature walk along the cliff top south of their
site (adjacent to the Gannet Colony).
The 4 km return walk features wonderful coastal scenery and diverse and
unique flora with several rest areas along the way. A carpark is situated
at each end, making the walk suitable for wheelchairs and prams.
